MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - The city of Memphis has earmarked $5 million in funds to upgrade AutoZone Park.

The home of the Memphis Redbirds is set to receive upgraded LED lights, and improved batting cage area and safety netting.

The city approved a total of $16 million in taxpayer money to be split between AutoZone Park and 100 N Main--the skyscraper will receive $10 million of that money, with another $1 million paying for the costs of issuance.

Team leaders have been seeking the money since renovations to AutoZone Park and a new stadium for 901FC were ultimately left out of a funding deal between the state and the City of Memphis.

“We’re running on most of the systems, most of the things inside this building are 25 years old,” Redbirds President and General Manager Craig Unger said back in March. “From HVAC to the lights to all the infrastructure pipes and everything and those things are breaking down on a constant basis.”
