Tennessee Governor talks President Trump’s visit to Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Tennessee Governor Bill Lee said the Memphis Safe Task Force and National Guard presence in Memphis have been a success. He said that’s most likely what will be discussed Monday when President Donald Trump visits Memphis.
“These are the lowest crime numbers month over month in 25 years Memphis. We need it to last. Six months doesn’t create a lasting effect, but we want it to last, and the National Guard will likely play a role in that. How long, we don’t know yet,” said Lee.
Lee said he believes President Trump has seen how ‘dramatically’ the MSTF has improved life for Memphians and wants to recognize that achievement.
Lee cited the over 7,000 arrests, almost 1,200 firearms seized, and 150 missing children located by the task force.
Lee also said that the federal government has invested significant dollars into this initiative and President Trump previously stated he is committed to helping create a safer Memphis.
“It’s an iconic city and people around the world know it but we don’t need them to know about it because of its crime numbers and most importantly, we need Memphians to feel good about their community and to feel safe. That’s what’s happening. I think the President wants to see it,” said Lee.
Lee said they are allocating more resources to Memphis to help with long-term plans of keeping crime down long after the task force and National Guard leave. He said that includes funding for public safety and additional permanent THP troopers.
“I think he wants to see it for himself, and he wants to thank the collaborative teams that have really made this happen,” said Lee.
White House officials said Trump’s visit is to highlight “incredible achievements of the Memphis Safe Task Force.”
Governor Lee told Action News 5 he will be meeting with the President on Monday.
