Operation Memphis Streets leads to 141 arrests over 2-week period
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - U.S. Marshals made dozens of arrests during a recent operation aimed at reducing gang violence.
Operation Memphis Streets was a two-week operation that led to 141 arrests, including 14 for homicide, and the clearing of 163 arrest warrants in Memphis.
Marshals deployed six teams of law enforcement officials targeting gang members and others with violent felony arrest warrants between July 14 and July 25.
Of the arrests, 31 were known or suspected gang members, according to U.S. Marshals.
“Every day the goal of the U.S. Marshals Service and Department of Justice is to make our streets safer and our communities stronger,” said U.S. Marshal Tyreece Miller. “Operation Memphis Streets may have concluded, but our commitment to the Memphis community and Memphis Police Department remains steadfast as collectively, we work toward a safer Memphis.”
Some of the arrests include:
- Victor Peeler, who was arrested for shooting at Memphis police officers on Independence Day. The shooters were caught on camera driving away while firing shots at the officers as they walked near the MPD Command Center on Peabody Place. He’s charged with 12 counts of attempted murder.
- Talia Jones, who was arrested in Minneapolis after a warrant was issued for facilitation of first-degree murder. Prosecutors say Jones was involved in the death of Patrick Houston Jr., the son of Memphis rapper Project Pat.
- Travis Boyd, who was arrested after a shooting outside Southland Casino last year. The shooting happened in the casino’s parking lot, killing the sole victim, identified as Orlando Garza.
- Derrion Taylor, who is accused of killing a 93-year-old woman. USMS reports that Taylor was 17 at the time of the crime, which occurred at a home on Kendale Avenue in South Memphis.
