MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - University Schools at the University of Memphis and Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital are partnering on a new early childhood education pilot program.

The program is designed to expand access to early learning opportunities for children under the age of five who experience extended stays in the hospital.

Action News 5 got an inside look Thursday at how Le Bonheur patients interact and participate in classroom instruction.

“It’s really sweet to see three and four-year-olds empathetic towards a hospitalized child,” said Erin Lasley, family resource coordinator at Le Bonheur. “And to know that these families are thought of and are part of something really changes their trajectory and outlook on being in the hospital because so much is lost when you’re here.”
