MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Shelby County General Sessions Court Clerk Tami Sawyer will not face any criminal charges following an incident at the courthouse in Downtown Memphis in October.

The video was posted on Facebook by State Senator Brent Taylor on October 9.

According to a Shelby County Sheriff’s report, Sawyer and her personal security guards walked around a checkpoint at the Shelby County Courthouse. One of those security guards was armed. The entire video is over 53 minutes according to records, but only a two-minute portion was posted by Taylor.

Clerk Sawyer shared her reasoning behind the exchange in the video and what led up to her interaction with law enforcement. “What happened is that two weeks ago, I was threatened several times via email and social media. That caused me to have to get security.”

On the day the video was filmed, Sawyer says that her security was armed, leading to her being questioned by law enforcement about safety in the building.

Sawyer also accused Taylor of attacking her politically.

The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and decided not to pursue any charges:

“At the request of my Office, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation opened an investigation into Clerk Sawyer’s role in this matter, viewed video, and interviewed relevant witnesses,” DA Steve Mulroy said. “The results of these were shared with and reviewed by my Office. There is simply no evidence that Clerk Sawyer solicited, aided or directed her security guard to bypass Courthouse security. Her interaction with sheriff deputies did not appear to violate any state law. As a result, she will face no criminal charges in this matter.”

Taylor reacted to Mulroy’s decision in a statement posted to Facebook:

I wish I could say I’m surprised. Tirade Tami and Mawkish Mukroy are two peas in a pod. The former is a racist, radical anti-police activist who has no business anywhere near our court system and the latter is a radical Restorative Justice Schemer whose bad policies required President Trump to send the Memphis Safe Task Force to clean up crime. Remember, Mulroy could have addressed the Wanda Halbert problem too but declined!

I don’t expect much from either of them, but somehow I’m still disappointed.

I’ll continue to #MakeMemphisMatter despite these buffoons. Join me! We have a city to save.

Trusted. Conservative. Leadership.

Senator Brent Taylor
