Woman, teen charged after striking deputy’s vehicle while escaping, SCSO says

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. (WMC) -The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an incident that left one deputy injured early Sunday morning.

Just after 2 a.m., patrol deputies responded to reports of multiple vehicles being broken into in the City Place Apartment complex located in the area of Crestwyn Hills Drive and Forest Hill Irene in southeast Shelby County.

When deputies arrived, the suspect in a vehicle attempted to flee by striking a deputy’s vehicle, injuring a deputy.

The suspect continued to drive through the apartment complex until it encountered additional deputies. When the suspect vehicle refused to follow deputies’ commands to stop and began to drive towards deputies, a deputy fired one time at the vehicle.

The sheriff’s office says one adult and four juveniles, ages ranging from 8 to 17-years-old, were in the vehicle at the time of the incident. No one in the vehicle were injured.

The deputy who was injured after his vehicle was hit suffered minor injuries and was treated on the scene by Shelby County Fire.

The driver and mother of three of the children in the vehicle, 47-year-old Jennifer Evans, was arrested and charged with four counts of aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer, evading to wit: motor vehicle, burglary to wit: motor vehicle, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and three counts of child abuse or neglect.

The 17-year-old in the vehicle was also charged with burglary to a motor vehicle.
