Flight delays and cancellations hit Memphis travelers amid federal shutdown
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Travelers at Memphis International Airport are experiencing flight delays and cancellations this weekend due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.
The Federal Aviation Administration ordered airlines to cut flights by 4 percent at high-traffic airports starting Friday as federal air traffic controllers have gone over a month without a paycheck.
By cutting down the number of flights, the FAA says they are easing the burden of understaffed FAA facilities.
Memphis International says staff at the airport are working under normal operations. However, flights are being cancelled by airlines due to the ongoing shutdown.
Brian Cook had his flights cancelled by Delta airlines, disrupting his family’s travel plans to Pittsburgh.
“We went up to the desk and they said ‘We’re not giving you a voucher because it’s not out fault, it’s the government’s fault,’” says Cook. “We’re very disappointed.”
