Food banks prepare for surge as SNAP benefits freeze looms
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Food banks in Shelby County are preparing for a surge in addressing food insecurity as SNAP benefits are set to freeze November 1.
The Mid-South Food Bank held several food drives this week as the impact of the federal government shutdown grows. On Friday, they hosted a mobile food giveaway for furloughed government employees at Holy City Church of God in Christ.
Hundreds of furloughed government employees waited hours in line to help feed their families as they go without a paycheck. Dozens of volunteers from different organizations worked for hours to deliver two weeks worth of food to roughly a thousand people.
Nicole Willis with Mid-South Food Bank says people can help by donating money. One $10 donation is enough to provide 40 meals.
“We’re just encouraging people to go on our website and donate,” says Willis. “Host food drives, fund drives. You may have something in your pantry that you haven’t used. Please feel free to drop those off.”
