Shelby Co. Mayor vetoes resolution to force MSCS Board member reelections
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Shelby County Mayor, Lee Harris has vetoed a resolution that would move all Memphis-Shelby County School Board seats to the 2026 ballot.
Harris sent a memo to the Shelby County Board of Commissioners on Monday stating “Absent an emergency or in the case of criminal misconduct, I do not believe that the terms of elected officials should be shortened”.
The resolution was approved during a commission meeting on September 22 and would shorten the terms for the current five board members who were elected in 2024 by two years and align the school board election with county commission’s elections.
The memo also mentioned the new law (Senate Bill No. 1336/House Bill No. 1383), which was passed earlier this year, and sponsored by Representative Torey Harris and Senator Brent Taylor, which allows both Shelby and Knox counties to hold school board elections the same year as county elections.
