SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (WMC) - Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch says a shooting involving a DeSoto County deputy has been deemed justified.

The shooting happened August 30, 2023, in Southaven.

A DeSoto County deputy shot and killed DeMarcus Williams during a search warrant procedure.

DeSoto County officials say Williams pointed a gun at deputies, who responded by shooting Williams in the chest, killing him.

According to Demarcus’ girlfriend, officers broke the windows and threw smoke bombs inside. Family says Williams thought someone was breaking into his home, so he was protecting himself.

Deputies say Williams had a lengthy criminal record, including murder, assault, aggravated robbery, multiple drug charges, and multiple gun charges.

Fitch did not provide details on why the shooting was considered justifiable.
