SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (WMC) - Southaven city leaders say their plan for a hotel and convention center are moving forward.

The city says the land deal is expected to close in October and dirt will be moving this fall.

Southaven officials say things are expected to go vertical in the Spring.

The development will be built next to Landers Center and will be the first like it in the state of Mississippi.

The hope is that major conventions will choose Southaven rather than the traditional options like the Gulf Coast or Tupelo.

The hotel will be a 7-story, 240 room hotel, sitting on six acres on Pepper Chase and Venture Roads.

Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite says he’s been working on this project since 2017.

“I call it ‘Project Sky’ and the reason I call it that is it’s going to change the skyline of Southaven, so I’m extremely excited about it,” Musselwhite said last year.

The development will include a 275,000 square foot expansion of the convention center with a skywalk to the hotel outfitted with a resort-style pool with a lazy river, plus a high-end restaurant and plenty of dining space.
