MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Memphis police officer has been charged in the death of a woman whose body was found Tuesday morning in her car near a Shell station on Whitten Road.

Officials said Chancy Jones, 37, was arrested while on duty Tuesday night on a second-degree murder charge.

"It's a good day in the fact we've apprehended a criminal," Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin said. "It's always a sad day when you find out it's one of your own."

Investigators believe Jones killed Phyllis Malone, whose body was found by a delivery driver after her car was spotted parked across several spaces in the gas station's parking lot.

At a press conference Wednesday, Godwin said Jones, who is married, was having an affair with Malone.  According to Godwin, their relationship was a rocky one, something that apparently came to a head Tuesday morning.

"It was not a long relationship," Godwin said. "I would say weeks, not months."

In two years on the streets, Jones has a clear record with the Memphis Police Department, with no disciplinary problems on his record.

Godwin said Jones reported for duty Tuesday night at the MPD's Raines Station, where he was confronted by homicide detectives with the second-degree murder charge.
