A Mitchell High School senior died Monday while vacationing with a group of students in the Bahamas.

The Bahama Journal reports the 18-year-old male died in a hotel swimming pool, the victim of an apparent accident.  Police Superintendent Basil Rahming is quoted in the paper as saying a group of students were in the pool, "when a male member of the group was discovered lying underwater at the bottom of the pool."

Rahming said fellow students immediately pulled him from the water and tried to revive the victim, while an ambulance was called.

The student was pronounced dead a short time later at a local hospital.

A Memphis City Schools spokesperson said in a statement, ""We are deeply saddened by the loss of a beloved Mitchell High School senior who lost his life in a tragic accident in the Bahamas, while on a senior class trip.  He was an outstanding student and athlete, from a family of Mitchell graduates, and he will be sorely missed by his numerous friends and family members.  His Mitchell High School family and the entire Memphis City Schools district mourn his passing.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family in this time of bereavement.  They have our deepest sympathy."

The name of the victim has not been released.
