Mid-South hemp store sees high demand, seeks expansion
SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC) - A new hemp-based health store in Mississippi is unique to the Mid-South, and it is looking to expand.
The store sells cannabinoid products it claims provides an alternative to medication for many painful ailments.
Cannabinoids are chemical compounds derived from hemp. The human body naturally produces similar compounds that are involved in appetite, memory, movement, and pain.
One specific cannabinoid, cannabidiol, has been deemed safe in certain doses by the Food and Drug Administration and the World Health Organization. Cannabidiol has been approved for use in certain medicines that treat specific epilepsy conditions and the side effects caused by some cancer therapies.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the FDA both say more research is needed on cannabinoids to determine if they are effective treatments for chronic pain. Doctors say it is unclear if cannabinoids are any better or worse than other pain management options, such as over-the-counter drugs like ibuprofen.
Proponents of cannabinoids say they are effective at treating nearly any ailment, from neuropathy and back pain to anxiety and migraines.
THC, the principal psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, is highly regulated by the federal government. THC is one of the cannabinoids in marijuana.
None of the products at The CBD Store in Southaven contain THC.
"We have products with no THC in them, so you're getting the help without the high," store owner Callie Vance said.
Vance is extremely passionate about her work because cannabinoids have helped her family.
Her brother lost his left leg when he was 15 due to complications from a broken ankle. Cannabinoids changed his life.
"He dealt with a lot of problems with opioid addiction and stuff like that. So it's just been a miracle for him," Vance said. "So that's why I opened this store is to help other people kind of get the same results that I did through a natural alternative."
The store has been open a few weeks and business has gone extremely well--especially for the pain cream.
"People love it, it's one of our top selling products. I can barely keep it in stock," Vance said.
Business is going so well, Vance is already planning to expand to Collierville. She said she hopes she can help as many people as possible.
The CBD Store has cannabinoids in lotions, gummies, bath balms, and more. The store even has products for pets.
To be clear, none of the claims that cannabinoids in general are effective treatments have been approved by the FDA. The CBD Store's website even clearly states that "The products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease."
Since the products are not regulated by the FDA, the active contents of each product are not verified or tested by an independent regulatory body.
