BARTLETT, TN (WMC) - A 73-year-old Bartlett man is behind bars on a $1,000,000. He stands accused of killing his live-in girlfriend.

The shooting happened Thursday night at Glenchase Drive in Bartlett.

Police arrived at the scene to find a 52-year-old woman, Sheila Scott, on the kitchen floor bleeding out after being shot with a 20 gauge shotgun.

Scott told officers her boyfriend, Bobby Massengill, shot her. She then told officers that he did it on purpose.

"Shocked, shocked. You never know what's going on behind closed doors," neighbor Vanessa Flohr said.

Massengill told police he and Scott ran errands Thursday evening. When they came home, both of them had some drinks.

Massengill told police he "didn't care for the fruity drinks" that Scott made, so he went to bed.

Shortly thereafter, he woke up to the sound of things being smashed in the kitchen.

Massengill said he grabbed the shotgun, walked around into the kitchen, and pulled the trigger.

He said he then tried to reload the weapon and shoot himself, but he was unable to complete that task.

Massengill is charged with first-degree murder.

Bartlett Police Department said the couple had been living together for the past three months. In that time, police had no prior reports of domestic violence between the couple.
