MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - It starts with one person, one volunteer, and one woman turning her love language--food--into a recipe for change.

Ginger Threlkeld, a wife and mother of two, is dedicated to developing the lives of youth in the Orange Mound Community with RedZone Ministries.

What started out as a once-a-month dinner, turned into a four-year mission to demonstrate how anyone can influence youth without any special talents--just a willingness to love and act.

"The students who attend summer camp with Kids Across America practice the motto I'm third...meaning you put God first, then others, then yourself," Threlkeld said.

That motto has Threlkeld leading by example. She believes the best part of being a volunteer is being a consistent presence in someone's life, by showing up. Just like the students who attend RedZone. They elect to be a part of the program, neither parents nor school administrators require them to be there.

In Threlkeld's four years with the ministry, she has seen growth, joy, and excitement in her students. She's also hoping that excitement will flourish and allow many of the students to return to Memphis after graduation and share their gifts with the community.

One of her students, Tereniee Brooks, who never imagined going to college, will enter her Freshman year of college thanks to the optimism, leadership, and love she received from Threlkeld.

This should be celebrated considering nearly 40 percent of seniors at Melrose fail to graduate, and nearly 1 in 5 students d rop out of Melrose High School before graduating.

Threlkeld for all that you've done in the past four years and for all that you will do, inspiring others with your mentorship and leadership, congratulations! You are our Mid-South Hero.
