LAKELAND, TN (WMC) - Three teens are in the hospital after being shot when gunfire broke out at a sweet 16 party in Lakeland.

The shooting happened Sunday night at a clubhouse party on Melwood Oak Drive, near I-40.

Two of the teen boys were taken to the hospital in critical condition. The other victim was transported in non-critical condition.

The suspects got away in a white Chrysler 200.

Some Oakwood neighbors are speechless. Others are angry.

"It's so out of character," Josh Paire said. "Probably most people like me, I don't even have words for it right now. It's just not Lakeland."

Paire lives a block away and was in his backyard when the shooting started Sunday night.

"I think it was about 10:30 p.m. or so and we heard a series of two or three bursts of fire," Paire said. "Thought it was fireworks at first. We have neighbors up there that basically had to hit the deck. They were at the pool.

Lakeland Mayor Wyatt Bunker released the following statement on the shooting:

We are all shocked about the shooting incident that occurred between non-Lakeland residents at a local HOA clubhouse. Apparently this group was able to use a residents name to rent the facility for a "Sweet Sixteen Party." A large group of teens predominantly from Cordova and Germantown High Schools attended. Gang members, who were refused entry, returned to their vehicle and began shooting at guests. Sources at the scene reported 3 shot with 2 in critical condition.

Bunker said the party was attended by a mix of Germantown and Cordova high school kids, and that the party's host used an Oakwood neighborhood resident's name to rent the clubhouse.

Neighbors are now calling into question the HOA clubhouse rental policy.

"I don't know what the rules are, to be honest," Paire said. "I can tell you that it's a pretty hot topic right now right now. My wife was on social media this morning I know there's a lot of people with a lot of opinions on how that clubhouse should be rented."

Paire expects the HOA to reconsider the rules as a result of Sunday night's shooting.
