MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - West Memphis Police Department is investigating a shooting at Sunset Inn.

The incident happened around 6 a.m. Saturday morning on Martin Luther King Drive.

The robber approached the victim at gunpoint, and a struggle ensued.

"What I heard this morning was gunshots," said a man who asked not to be identified.

During the struggle, the victim shot the robber, who was pronounced dead on the scene.

"West Memphis is suppose to be a safe place, and somebody got killed here. I couldn't believe it," motel guest John Hong said. "I couldn't believe it. I'm in a crime scene, you know?"

Police said the shooting appears to be justified and no arrests have been made at this time.

The identity of the robber has not been released.

"I don't want to get hurt by some crazy guy out there. I just want a place to stay away from the rain and the snow for right now," Hong said.

The West Memphis Police Department issued the following statement on shooting:

"This is a terrible tragedy in which a young man lost his life this morning. We hope that anyone who entertains the idea of committing a crime like this takes the time to realize the tragic consequences that can come out of it. In these investigations we have to also protect the rights of our citizens to be able to defend themselves when presented with a deadly threat such as this."
