16-year-old in critical condition; accidentally shot by brother
MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A 16-year-old was accidentally shot by his brother, according to Memphis Police Department.
Police said the shooting happened around 10 a.m. on North McNeil Street, near the intersection of Brown Avenue. Neighbors said the family had just moved into the neighborhood within the last couple months.
Officers detained an 18-year-old who they said accidentally shot his brother. A man who lives at the house, who did not want to be identified, said the shooting happened inside.
After gunshots rang out in the neighborhood, residents rushed were confused and worried.
"I'm trying to find out now what happened," neighbor Cecily Landfair said.
Landfair said she got into her car and drove up and down the street after she heard the gunshots.
"I heard a lot of gunshots. Like maybe two or three, maybe four," she said.
The man WMC Action News 5 spoke to at the home said he and his girlfriend had taken in her two younger brothers recently because they didn't have any place to stay. He said didn't know what happened since he wasn't home at the time of the shooting.
"It's terrible," Landfair said.
Neighbors felt helpless seeing the flashing blue lights around their homes. It's unclear at this point who owns the gun that was fired.
"If you got a gun in the house you should lock it up or don't leave it loose for the children to get a hold of it so quickly," Landfair said.
The 16-year-old was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
It's unclear if the 18-year-old will face any charges.
