4 arrested for stealing over $1M in construction equipment
MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Shelby County Sheriff's deputies arrested four people accused of stealing more than $1 million in construction equipment.
Law enforcement raided a home on Chelsea Avenue late Thursday night and detained 10 people; deputies took four of those 10 into custody.
Deputies said they had been investigating the case for several days, and they conducted a search warrant Thursday night.
"We had a bunch of thefts from construction sites in Arlington," said SCSO spokesperson Earle Farrell.
Deputies said there is so much equipment, it will take days to haul it all away.
"I'm happy they got caught," said contractor Sam Hearn.
Like many contractors, Hearn is now relieved after the bust. His crew works in the new Arlington subdivision and lost a lot of supplies.
"They're stealing stuff from us and it's holding us up on building these houses," Hearn said.
Hearn said he reported it to deputies after realizing shingles and copper at the homes were stolen.
"It's an easy target," Hearn said. "We can't be out here all the time."
"They had been operating for some time and we knew they were there, we just couldn't catch them," Farrell said.
Deputies said more arrests are on the way, and those arrested will face theft charges. Some could even face assault charges.
"Because they fought our deputies when they tried to arrest them," Farrell said. ?
