Loved ones mourn Overton High School student gunned down
MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Monday night was an emotional night for the loved ones of a promising Overton High School student who was gunned down this weekend.
Jaheim Walker, 15, was a football stud at Overton High School with aspirations of playing in the NFL. Those dreams were struck down when he was shot and killed.
His loved ones gathered together Monday to say goodbye to Walker. With candles, balloons, and t-shirts, they gathered in the parking lot of the high school where Walker was in the 10th grade. It was a night to remember the teen killed, while grieving the life events he will not be present for in their lives.
"He ain't going to be there for me for my birthday! That's my baby! Why did they have to take my baby?" Walker's girlfriend, Kamirakle Crawford, said.
Family members couldn't stop themselves from breaking down while talking about Walker's promising future.
"He was only 15. That's all my cousin wanted to do. All he wanted to do was play football," Walker's cousin, Cory Charis, said. "He ain't never threatened nobody, he was just a good kid."
"Ball was his life! Ball was his life!" Natasha Walker, victim's mother, said. "I don't get to see my baby's grandkids! My grandkids! Graduate from high school...college. None of that."
Dreams for the future--all shattered.
"He said, 'one day, you going to be Mrs. Walker.' He said, 'you going to be the one I marry in the future,'" Crawford said.
Along with the grief, was anger.
"You all have to learn how to live with one another," Jaheim's grandfather, Larry Walker, said.
"He never was no bad person at all, never," Jaheim's aunt, Krystal Walker, said.
"Nice person," Kiara Savage said. "He was cool, didn't mess with anybody."
Monday, grief counselors were at Overton High as friends and teachers dealt with the tragedy.
Three men have been arrested and charged with Walker's murder. Police said he was riding in a car Saturday on Cherry Road with friends and his older brother when they were hit with gunfire. Jaheim did not survive.
"He was 15 years old, still a baby," Savage said.
Bullets struck the home of Andrea Savage, as well as her neighbor's home.
"I just jumped up and made sure everybody was okay," Andrea Savage said.
She said the gunfire came through her living room couch. She was at home with her kids, grandchildren, and boyfriend.
"It's a couch right there by my window, so somebody is always probably sitting there playing the game or watching TV," she said.
Now, Walker's family must plan a funeral for a teen that many said had no enemies.
"Now he's not coming home tonight," Walker said. "He didn't come home and that's the worst part."
Police have not released a clear motive for the shooting.
