Woman dies following Frayser shooting, 2 others injured
MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Two people were shot in a Frayser neighborhood on Wednesday afternoon.
Memphis Police Department said an 18-year-old woman died, a 29-year-old man is in extremely critical condition, and another male victim is in non-critical condition.
"We are a very close-knit family, and it is going to be very devastating for us to deal with this during this time. It's going to be heart-wrenching and it will take a lot to get past this," the victim's uncle, Edward Rudd, said.
Investigators said the shooting happened on The Oaks Avenue in Frayser.
"I heard what sounded like popping for a transformer," neighbor Kathy Pichelouee said.
Family members of the victims are in disbelief.
"Never thought this would have happened to our family," Rudd said. "I'm distraught in all of this. It's more than I can contend with."
Rudd said his niece and nephew are the two victims. He said his nephew is recovering at the hospital, but family said 18-year-old Ronevia Williams was the one killed. We are told she was a high school graduate who had plans on going to college.
No arrests have been made.
Grand View Heights Elementary and Middle School went on a precautionary lockdown as a result of the shooting. Parents were notified and no children were injured.
"This is going to be devastating for us to deal with during this time," Rudd said.
It's a loss that is made even more devastating by the fact the shooters are still on the run.
"Make it right. Turn yourselves in and just try to make it right and do what we need to do to get these guys off the streets," Rudd said.
The woman's death marks the 209th homicide in Memphis in 2016.
Police said they have one person in custody, but are still searching for three other suspects. They said the suspected shooters were in a maroon SUV. If you have any information, you are urged to call the Memphis Police Department.
