Stray bullet flies into home, barely missing 2 young children
DRUMMONDS, TN (WMC) - A Mid-South mother has an extra reason to feel thankful after a bullet flew into her home while her children were inside.
The family heard six gunshots before the bullet flew through the window just inches from two small children.
"Turned around saw the bullet hole in the window and instant panic hit me," the mother said. "There was glass on the floor, glass on him in the swing."
The bullet entered the home in the place the two children play the most. Her two-month-old was in a baby swing, and her one-year-old was standing nearby when the bullet shattered the glass, ricocheting off a cabinet.
"How do you protect your family from some random bullet that tears through their home?" she asked.
Tipton County Sheriff's Office said investigators have not found anything to indicate the shot was intentional. They said the distance of the shot was over 700 meters.
"Because of someone's carelessness, we could have lost either one of our children; it was so close."
That is part of what worried the woman—while she is thankful her sons are still here, she is angry that her sense of security is gone.
"If they would have hit one of our children, it would have ruined our lives."
Investigators are still looking into the case, and have not made any arrests. The family said they are not sure if they want to press charges, because they are more concerned with raising awareness about gun safety.
