MFD provides free smoke detectors to any Memphian
MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Every house in Memphis should have a working smoke detector.
That's the message coming from Memphis Fire Department following a house fire that killed nine people Monday morning.
MFD said the home where Monday's tragedy took place did have a smoke detector, but it was burned so badly, firefighters couldn't tell if it was in working condition.
Anyone living in Memphis can get a smoke detector for free. All you have to do is ask MFD.
No matter your income, as long as you live in Memphis, MFD will give you either a basic model or a 10-year smoke detector free of charge.
Corporate donations, the Tennessee Fire Marshal's Office, and a portion of the MFD budget helps cover the cost of supplying anyone in the city with a free smoke detector.
Plus, Memphis firefighters will install them (by request) at no additional cost.
MFD said it's standard protocol for firefighters to go door-to-door with free smoke detectors after a fire fatality.
Reola Fason lives a block away from the fatal fire that happened Monday morning. She's getting a replacement detector from firefighters who came knocking on her door Monday.
"Oh, satisfaction--peace of mind," Fason said.
Memphis citizens should call Memphis Fire Museum at 901-320-5650 to request a free smoke detector.
Anyone living outside Memphis should contact their local fire department--most of them have similar programs set up to keep citizens safe.
