MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Memphis firefighters rushed to battle two separate fires early Tuesday morning.

The first fire sparked just before midnight at a vacant home on Vance Avenue near Vance Middle School. Flames shot high out of the roof, which partially collapsed. Firefighters had to race out of the building.

The fire became so strong at one point that crews called for backup. They decided to keep the flames from spreading rather than try to save the building.

More than 40 firefighters were on the scene at one point.

Just a few minutes later, around 12:15 a.m., another fire sparked on North Hollywood Street near Calvert Avenue.

A woman and two children lost their home in this blaze and asked for Red Cross assistance.

The cause of both fires is currently unknown, but they are not believed to be related.
