Activist Devante Hill posts $7,500 bond

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Memphis protest organizer Devante Hill found himself behind bars Thursday, but was released after posting a $7,500 bond.

Hill had active warrants in Shelby County for driving on a suspended license and filing a false report.

Hill, who represented One Memphis, One Vision, marched arm-in-arm with Interim Police Director Michael Rallings on the Interstate 40 bridge. He also played a big part in Monday's town hall meeting.

"This is to weed out those officers who are not operating in integrity," he said earlier this week about the protests happening around Memphis.

While saying those words, Hill himself had two warrants out for his arrest. He was charged Thursday with filing a fake police report; the warrant for driving on a suspended license was dropped.

The details surrounding his charge of filing a false report have not been released at this time.

Interim Police Director Michael Rallings explained that his officers do not check warrants during protests.

"We have never impeded on anyone's first amendment right by stopping a protest to check for warrants," Rallings said. "As I have said many times, I would have walked with a grizzly bear off that bridge to get my officers and the participating civilians to safety."

Hill is due in court Friday at 9 a.m.
