MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Memphis police officers responded to a shooting in the 4100 block of Tarry Park Drive inside the Ten Mile Creek apartment complex where one person was killed.

Kenneth Garrett Jr, 21, was shot and killed at the apartments just before 2:30 p.m.  Police have not released a motive for the shooting.

Garrett's father, Kenneth Garrett Sr, is heartbroken.

"He was a smart, bright child," Kenneth said. "Just got strayed away into the wrong people in the streets, man. Just the streets took over."

Kenneth Garrett Sr. said the violence is simply out of control, and even parents who try to keep their kids on the right path have lost control.

"This gang stuff, man, I'm just sick of it," Garrett Sr. said. "You try to talk to them, tell them the right thing to do. They just, they don't listen and this is what happens. I'm tired of it, man."

However, the violence is not just affecting the families of victims these days.

"It makes me wanna pack my things and move," neighbor Loretta Hampton said. "I know violence happens everywhere, but this the worst I done saw."

Hampton said gunshots and other violence are far too common for her comfort anymore.

"It's almost like when I'm watching television, I have to get down on the floor because you never know if a bullet may come through the window. So, it's really not safe," she said.

Witnesses reported several men sped away from the scene in a black vehicle.

No arrests have been made.
