MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - An inferno at a Memphis apartment complex Thursday night happened at the same location where numerous fires have happened in the past.

Witnesses said they saw smoke billowing from miles away, rising from the Somerset Apartments at Winchester Road and Lake Park Drive, as crews raced to the scene. Fortunately, the building that burned was vacant.

Officials on the scene said firefighters from at least four stations responded to the blaze and used at least two ladder trucks to fight the fire.

One man said he saw the smoke from miles away.

"I could see it from Lamar. There's some people who could see it from the Walmart on Shelby Drive, so just imagine how big the smoke was," Nicholas Johnson said.

The apartments have been plagued by fires over the years, and many suspected a serial arsonist. We're told only one building is currently occupied and neighbors said they would like to see the entire complex torn down.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
