Student returns wallet found belonging to San Antonio Spurs star
MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A full-time college student--scraping to get by--stumbled upon a wallet holding thousands of dollars in cash. Little did he know he was holding the wallet of an NBA star.
The 18-year-old who found the wallet is Dekeevin Johnson. He cleans buses for Cline Tours by day. And by night, he hits the books as he works toward a degree. A few weeks ago, he made a discovery that could have changed his life.
"I came back in and I cleaned the bus that he was on and while I was going down the aisle of the bus, I found the wallet sitting up under the seat," Johnson explained.
Inside the wallet was $2,000 in cash and a top-of-the-line credit card. It also contained an I.D.
"I took it into our office and I gave it to them," he said. "That's how I was taught...to give everything back, like you would want somebody to give to you."
The wallet didn't belong to any normal tourist. The cash inside was earned on the NBA courts by Spurs superstar David West.
The San Antonio Spurs rented the bus when they played against the Memphis Grizzlies.
So far, Johnson hasn't heard from West, but to his own mother, he has the heart of a champion.
"I just wanted people to know that all of our young black males are not out here doing the wrong thing," Johnson's mother, Denise Crane, said. "We still got good kids that do good things and if we raise them right, they will, in turn, make us very proud."
