MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Police are investigating a fatal hit and run crash.

Police said a man was hit by a car in the 3900 block of Jackson Avenue near Jackson Park.

The man was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition and later died.

Police later identified the victim as a 52-year-old.

"It sounded like a car crash," witness Keith Massey said. "It was loud."

Clothing and car parts covered the street Sunday afternoon.

"His leg was down here. His body was over there," Massey said.

The suspect left the scene in a vehicle believed to be a gray Lincoln Navigator.

"That's sad. I hope they catch him," Massey said.

Friends said the man lived near the scene of the crash all his life and was seen walking in the area every day.

"Very friendly; eager to talk to somebody, help anybody," friend Pastor Kenneth Murphy said.

Friends said they cannot understand how someone could drive away and leave him in the street.

"You need to stand up," Murphy said. "Be a man or a women and go through the system. You will have your day in court also."

Police said the suspect left in a 2003 or 2004 Navigator. The suspect is described as a young, light-skinned black man with dreadlocks.

A witness followed the hit-and-run suspect but eventually lost him.
