Couple robbed, shot at during Craigslist scam
RALEIGH, TN (WMC) - An Olive Branch couple said they're happy to be alive after being shot at and robbed during a Craigslist sale Thursday.
Memphis Police Department said the couple planned to meet a woman at the intersection of Joslyn Street and Hillwood Drive in Raleigh to buy a truck. When they showed up, a group of men wearing dark-colored hoodies approached them with guns and demanded their money.
"The gentleman had the gun in my face," Eugene Rose said. Rose said the group of men had AK47s pointed at him and his wife.
The suspects shot into the couple's car as the couple drove away. The men ended up stealing $16,000 that the couple brought to purchase a 2010 Chevy pick-up truck.
Surveillance video captured by a neighbor's camera shows the couple pulling off in their car as the robbers opened fired.
MPD believe the whole thing was a setup. The people behind the Craigslist ad never intended to sell the Olive Branch couple a truck. They just wanted to take a big haul of cash.
The couple said it's a lesson learned.
"You need to go to a police station or some fire station or some sight where there are cameras and you feel protected," Rose said about what he and his wife learned from the experience.
"We're blessed to be alive," Rose said. "I'm alive, and I'm not going to do this again."
The criminals behind the Craigslist scam are still at-large. If you know anything that can help MPD solve the case, call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
