EXCLUSIVE: Mid-south mother’s plea for speedy trial in 4-year-old son’s murder

ARLINGTON, TN (WMC) - In an open letter to Governor Bill Haslam, Ashley Taylor wrote a desperate plea for the Tennessee Governor to step in and advocate that officials speed up the process in her son's murder case.

"You may recall a little boy, Asher Drake Dilworth, who was murdered in McNairy County in August of 2014," Taylor wrote. "Kyrie Kyle, the girlfriend of his father, shoved him into a dresser knocking him unconscious and left him there instead of seeking medical attention. He was brain dead three days later after being airlifted to Le Bonheur in Memphis."

Taylor's son, Asher Dilworth, 4, died in August 2014, but the trial has been postponed multiple times. The accused killer is Kyrie Kyle; she's his father's girlfriend. Kyle remains in the McNairy County jail awaiting trial.

"We've been waiting for a year and a half to have a trial to see justice for the brutal murder of my son and I feel like for unknown reasons people are dragging their feet," Taylor said.

The District Attorney's office stated because of the complexity of the case they agreed with the defense to reset the trial each time. The most recent reason was technical issues with the processing of evidence. District Attorney General Mike Dunavant released this statement:

"This is an important and complicated first degree murder case involving a child victim. We have routinely and completely communicated with the victim's family at every critical stage of the prosecution. We are moving forward as expeditiously as possible, while at the same time guaranteeing due process of law for the defendant and the state. "

The boy spent three days in hospitals, undergoing emergency brain surgery and suffering from violent seizures after the incident in McNairy County. The official police report stated the boy also had several bruises and teeth marks that were caused over a period of time.

"My understanding is that in a kind of 'you're not my mommy' spat he was shoved into an object in the bedroom and left unconscious," Taylor said.

Now this mom is hoping speedy justice will come from this open letter to the governor.

"I felt like he died at the hands of somebody that clearly didn't love him, and I couldn't imagine him leaving the world not being in the hands of somebody who did love him," Taylor said.

The mother stated she hasn't received a response on the letter from the governor's office so far. The trial for Kyrie Kyle was reset for June 27 at 9 a.m. in McNairy County.
