Memphis cuisine on display for Black Restaurant Week

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - One Memphis entrepreneur has turned a love of food into a dining deal for local African-American owned restaurants.

The Memphis Black Restaurant Week runs from March 7-13 with $15 lunch specials and $25 dinner specials.

For Valerie Peavy, The Office @ Uptown started with a need in the neighborhood to offer a place to make a copy or print an e-mail.

The place then grew into a restaurant that fulfills all those needs.

"And what we afford is people the ability to come and work," Peavy said. "We have a conference room in the back. We have work space. We have plugs, wifi, convenience copies."

Peavy said perhaps the best part is the food they serve to patrons.

"We do an awesome breakfast and lunch," Peavy said. "We have very unique items and we tailor them to the community."

The restaurant is one of several that will be featured in the first-ever Black Restaurant Week.

"A lot of us have favorite places to eat in the city and they are kind of best kept secrets and we just didn't want them to be secrets anymore," Joya Smith said.

Smith is one of the coordinators of the event, along with Cynthia Daniels. They decided to feature eight restaurants.

The list includes: Déjà Vu, The HM Dessert Lounge, Evergreen Grill, The Bistro, Onix, Mot's and Ed's, Scoops Parlor and The Office @ Uptown.

"This is an opportunity for us to pour back into our community and really a give a spotlight to some of these underdogs in the city that are wonderful," Daniels said.
