Friends believe couple, unborn child killed after arguing over hair products
MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A soon-to-be mother and her boyfriend were shot and killed in the 2100 block of Westchester Circle, over hair, according to his family.
While police have not released a motive for the killing of EJ Tate, his girlfriend and their unborn child, family and friends of Tate said it may have been over Brazilian hair.
Many questions still surround what happened in the parking lot on Friday where the couple died.
Police said EJ Tate and his girlfriend, Edwina Thomas, were shot while sitting in a car.
Tate died on the scene and Thomas died at the hospital.
Victoria Seay, 18, was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact. Police said she drove the shooter away from the scene.
"They were such a tight couple. If you saw one you saw the other. She was such a beautiful young lady," EJ Tate's uncle, Lee Tate, said.
Family members describe Tate as a loving father to a 6-year-old girl and a hardworking man.
Tate and his cousin run a business called VirginHair4US.com.
The website said the company sells extensions, hair and wigs starting at $50 and going all the way up to $250.
Family and friends feel both the driver and the shooter knew Tate and may have bought hair from him before.
They feel this was an attempted robbery gone wrong.
"They didn't have to do this. If they wanted the hair, I'm pretty sure he would say you can have this hair. My life is not worth it," Lee Tate said.
The family has a message for the shooter.
"You done wrong. You devastated our family. You took away a father. You took away a son. You took away a nephew. You took away part of our community," Tate said.
The shooter is not in police custody at this time. If you know who he is or where he may be, call CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.
