Ellen DeGeneres wins award, donates winnings to St. Jude
MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Ellen DeGeneres, one of America's favorite comedians and daytime talk show hosts, is using that fame to help St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
DeGeneres will take home the 2016 People's Choice Award for Favorite Humanitarian.
"I am so honored to be receiving the People's Choice Humanitarian Award," DeGeneres said in a statement. "I think it sums me up perfectly as I am both a human and an itarian."
The award comes with a $200,000 donation from Walgreens, which will be going to St. Jude.
President and CEO of ALSAC Richard Shadyac, Jr. had this to say about the donation:
"Ellen DeGeneres is an incredible supporter of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. She passionately supports our mission of finding cures and saving children stricken with cancer and other life-threatening diseases, and we are greatly appreciative of not only the funds she has raised, but the awareness she has created for St. Jude nationally and internationally through her efforts. We congratulate her on the People's Choice Award for Favorite Humanitarian."
In addition to the $200,000, Walgreens agreed to donate $1 to St. Jude for every CoverGirl, Pantene, Crest, and Oral-B 3DWhite product sold at Walgreens from January 6-9.
