Body shop fire damages 10 luxury cars
MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - An early morning fire destroyed several expensive cars inside a body shop.
The fire started around 12:45 a.m. at Expert Import Service on Pleasant View Road. Firefighters rushed to the scene to control the flames.
Three Mercedes and two BMWs were five of the ten luxury cars damaged in the fire. The body shop's sign also fell victim to the flames, but nobody was injured.
The body shop's owner, Brian Massey, said this is the second time in recent memory his shop has caught fire.
"This happened to us early part of the summer and nothing's been done about it," Massey said. "I think that's the biggest aggravant of everything."
Wendell Washington left his Mercedes at the body shop to have the brakes repaired.
"It was parked right there in front," Washington said. "That's why I thought mine was burned. When I pulled up I saw that somebody had moved it. That's just a blessing!"
Despite the fire, Washington said it won't keep him from letting Massey keep and work on his car in the future.
Likewise, Massey said he's not going to let this second fire keep him from serving customers.
"Fortunately, we're pretty stable in the community, and we'll fight on," Washington said.
Customers whose cars were damaged will have their repairs paid for through the body shop's insurance.
It's unclear when Massey will be able to reopen. In the meantime, Memphis Fire Department is trying to figure out what sparked the fire.
