School bus flips in front of Dollar General store
MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A school bus flipped over on Jackson Avenue on Monday morning.
The bus overturned near the intersection of Jackson and Fair Oaks avenues in front of a Dollar General store.
Shelby County Schools said a driver and an aide were on the bus. No students were on the bus when it flipped.
"It was terrifying. It was the craziest thing I think I've ever seen," Josh Matz said.
Matz was standing in front of his office Monday morning when he saw the bus flip onto its side.
"As soon as the bus turned and flipped over on its side, I ran in and got everyone I could. And then we ran out and saw there were no kids on and helped the other lady get out," Matz said.
It happened just before 9:00 Monday morning on Jackson Avenue near Fairbrooks Avenue. Tire marks on the grass led up to the bus and investigators said it looked like the driver lost control, hopped the curb, and flipped the bus over.
Witnesses said two women were taken to the hospital. The driver, understandably shaken, told them she blacked out and woke up with the bus on its side.
Durham School Services said the driver is being evaluated, and the crash is under investigation. They confirm there were no students on the bus at the time.
By mid-morning the bus was flipped back upright and towed away. The scene was cleared and witnesses were grateful it wasn't worse.
"We heard the screaming. One lady was screaming pretty bad. We thought either there were kids on the bus," Matz said. "It was just the two ladies, and it turned out okay."
