Police shoot home invader after 911 call from closet
MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Memphis police shot a man they found him sneaking out of a woman's home.
Police said the victim took her cell phone and hid in her closet after the man broke into her home. Her call to 911 may have kept her safe.
"It looked like a war zone," neighbor Joe Thompson said. "We heard gun shots and we heard 'Let's see your hands.'"
Thompson said David Drive was covered with police Saturday night.
Police said just before 10 p.m., a woman called them from her closet saying a man has broken into her home.
When officers arrived they found Darion Harris, 23, climbing out one of the house's windows. When he tried to go back inside, the officer fired.
"When I went out it was chaos I saw a lot of police; big guns," Thompson said.
First responders took Harris to Regional Medical Center in non-critical condition and charged him with aggravated burglary and theft of property.
Neighbors said having Harris behind bars makes them feel better, but they will always remember that this could happen again.
"It's something to think about, maybe move? It can happen anywhere; you have to be cautious."
