MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A vacant house caught fire before sunrise Thursday.

It happened near the intersection of Ledger and Grand Opera roads around 2:40 a.m.

A Memphis Fire Department Battalion Chief said firefighters worked quickly to contain the fire, because they feared it could jump to neighboring houses that were occupied.

"It was very intense," neighbor Burt Jones said.

Jones commended the firefighters on keeping the rest of the neighborhood safe, but said it is time for someone to get rid of the vacant houses.

"Whoever owned those houses--the empty houses--needs to renovate or board them up, because they're causing a problem," Jones said.

Fire investigators have not yet said what caused the house to catch fire.
