MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Police are investigating an attempted robbery that ended with the suspect dead.

Richard Young, a clerk at Lamar Corner Grocery, came into work knowing that someone was shot and killed outside the store Wednesday night.

"I was shocked," said Young. "I cleaned up the blood stain that was out there this morning."

According to police, at about 9 p.m., a man walked up to another man and tried to rob him.  The robbery victim then pulled out a gun and shot the stranger. He then drove away to call 911 from another location.  He said he left because he didn't feel safe staying at the store.

"If I had a gun and somebody had a gun, I'd have probably shot him too," said Young.

At this point, police said they have not filed any charges as they continue to investigate whether this was a case of self defense.

Police haven't released the names of either man involved in the incident.

Young added that a lot of young people hang around the store's parking lot, trying to get money from customers.  He wondered whether both the attempted robbery and the shooting could have been avoided.

"If I was up here working last night, he probably wouldn't have got shot," Young said. "I would have run him off."
