1 person killed in gated community

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - One person was shot and killed inside a gated apartment complex near the Windyke Golf course.

"It's very quiet over here, so I'm just shocked someone got killed over here," Shandrea Herns said.

Around 6 Friday night, officers arrived at the neighborhood to find a man shot dead inside the gate.

Police are still trying to piece together what led up to the deadly shooting.

Neighbors say they're shocked and upset over the homicide, but they're relieved children playing nearby were not hurt.

"It's normally pretty safe here, so it's the first time something like this has gone down like that," Aaron Smith said.

However, neighbors say people without gate codes slip inside the perimeter more often than not.

"I've had a problem with that," John Jansckiewizc said. "These cars can just come right in."

"It's just so easy to get in and out," Herns said.

Now, neighbors say they're going to stay on high alert.

"I'm not going to leave my door unlocked anymore," Jansckiewizc said.

"I'm very concerned now," Herns said. "Especially because I have two little girls."

Police say they're still trying to figure out who opened fire and how exactly the man died.
