Horn Lake residents complain of high water bills

HORN LAKE, MS (WMC) - Some Horn Lake, Mississippi residents are concerned, saying they believe they're being overcharged for water in the city.
Barry Cook has lived in the shadow of a Horn Lake water tower for over 20 years, but he says he's never had a water bill as high as his latest one.
"My water is about a third to a half more," Cook explained.
Cook says he finds the increased costs frustrating, and he's started to try to conserve water to combat the prices.
"We only wash one day a week," Cook said. "I stopped watering the yard, things like that."
Several residents have gone to the city's water department with questions about a larger bill.
"I'm kind of curious too, but we've checked everything," said Horn Lake Mayor Allen Latimer. "We've checked with the director of Public Works, everything. The system seems to be working; that's why we want them to call us."
Latimer says he knows of no system-wide explanation for why some customers are paying higher bills, but he says he has heard the complaints and officials are looking into the claims.
"We are checking them as they come in," said Latimer. "There is no systematic problem that we've discovered."
Bottom line, according to Latimer: if your bill is not what you think it should be, call his office or Public Works and they will recheck what you are being billed for water.
If you live in Horn Lake and are having problems with your water bill, call (662)393-6178 or (662)393-0249. Meanwhile, Latimer says his office is doing everything they can to investigate the situation.
"We will take every step we can to make our citizens know that they are getting a fair bill."
