MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - An avid Mid-South churchgoer, who sometimes teaches Sunday school, is accused of getting a 15-year-old girl from the church pregnant.
Desmond Allgood said he spoke with WMC Action News 5 because he wanted to clear his name.
"I'm not a predator. I'm not a sex offender or none of that," Allgood said.
Allgood, who is married, was charged with statutory rape by an authority figure after a 15-year-old girl went to police on March 23 to report that she and Allgood had been in a sexual relationship for seven months.
The girl says Allgood is involved with the choir, mentors youth, and participates as a praise dance member at Vollintine Baptist Church. She says she met Allgood at church. The teen also reported that Allgood teaches Sunday school.
"I'm not a Sunday school teacher. When they ask me to teach, I will teach," he said.
The girl told police that she gave birth to Allgood's child in December 2014. According to an affidavit, Allgood is 31 years old.
"About my age, I'm not 31, I'm 28," he said.
WMC Action News 5's Jerica Phillips asked Allgood if he understands the Tennessee statutory rape law and he replied "Yeah, I realize that, but like I said, I'm not a predator."
Allgood said he did not want to discuss details about the case until he hires an attorney, but admits that he turned himself into MPD's sex crime unit Friday. There, he admitted to sex, but said Monday there was never a relationship with a teen.
To his church's congregation, he had this to say: "Everybody at the church, I'm really sorry that I even put y'all in this predicament."
Allgood is out of jail on a $40,000 bond and will face a judge on April 13.
