CORDOVA, TN (WMC) - Just one day after Christmas, an elderly couple is now without a home.

Their home in the 9000 block of Breckenridge Cove was completely destroyed by a massive fire in Lakeland.

Flames reached as high as 50 feet in the air Friday evening as crews worked to battle the blaze.

Fire crews on the scene said the home was completely engulfed when they arrived.

The elderly couple inside the home were able to evacuate safely and call 911.

"I was just hoping they were alright and out of the house," said neighbor Cody Downs. "I've known them for plenty of years, and they raised me when I was a kid.  I was just hoping they were alright."

Investigators are working to find out what caused the blaze, but officials say the home is totally destroyed.

"The house is gone," said Brent Perkins of the Shelby County Fire Department. "Sadly, we are here in the holiday season and our hearts go out to the family.  I hate to see this happen to anybody."

According to a press release from the Shelby County Fire Department, both homes on either side of the house were damaged, but saved.

One of the homeowners was taken to the hospital as a precaution, and one firefighter was also taken to the hospital with an injury to the knee.
