Gas in Memphis drops below $2/gallon

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Gas in Memphis can be found at $1.96 per gallon. It's true. And the cheap gasoline couldn't come at a better time -- right before the Christmas holiday.

The cheapest gas in Memphis, as of Friday afternoon, could be found at Cash Express on Macon Road near Berclair Road.

Analysts say the savings will carry on in the new year, saving drivers roughly $550 on average.

"I gotta get gas now," laughed Mary Williams. "And I was on low and I haven't seen it this cheap anywhere."

Drivers can hardly believe the low prices.

"I thought, 'Oh my gosh, I'm looking at the wrong sign,'" said Annette Cannon, who made sure to capitalize on the rare moment. "I filled up one car, then carried it home and went back and got the other one and came back and filled it up."

Memphis is well below the national, which sits around $2.50 per gallon.
