Woman carjacked at gunpoint in Medical District
MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Rachel Barr had just pulled into a parking spot in the Medical District around 6:50 a.m. Friday morning when a man, who she thought was homeless, approached.
"It was the scariest day of my life," she recalled.
Scary because the man demanded money, and she told him she didn't have any.
"He shoved the gun in the window and told me to open the door. I grabbed some of my stuff, I unlocked the door and he snatched the door open and shoved the gun in my face," said Barr. "I grabbed my wallet and I tried to hand it to him and he told me to open it. I opened it. He reached in and grabbed my money out."
She says the man kept trying to push her into the passenger seat, but she wouldn't let him.
"As he had the gun still pointed at me, he reached in and grabbed me and threw me out of the car."
The man only drove a couple of blocks away before fleeing because he didn't know how to drive her five-speed Saturn.
Barr, the mother of young children, says the man got away with $160 she had to pay bills. Because the carjacker took off with her only set of keys, police had to tow the car, costing Barr an additional $125 in towing fees.
It was a hard, and expensive, lesson for her.
Barr said, "Don't trust anybody. I don't care."
The suspect is described as a very, very thin man wearing an old green jacket with a patch on the arm, light colored jeans and white tennis shoes.
