Safety alert sent after attempted robbery at U of M law school
MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - University of Memphis students are on alert after an attempted robbery outside the downtown law school.
A photo released by MPD shows robbery suspects in a green Camry creeping by a law school student as she stuffed a backpack into her trunk. Moments later, police say a gun was pointed at her face.
"It's exam week, so everybody is here all day, all night," said student Elizabeth Booker.
The crime occurred around 1:50 a.m. on Tuesday underneath the pedestrian overpass near Court Avenue and Riverside Drive.
"Does it really surprise me?" asked Kyle Johnson. "Not all that much. But, that's the first incident we've had in four years, so, I really don't consider that the worst thing ever."
Police say the victim had already started her car when the suspect tapped on the window and pointed a gun at her. The suspect said something, but the victim was able to back up and drive away.
Officers usually advise crime victims to cooperate.
"I mean, I'm sure she did everything she could to be safe as possible," Booker said. "And I'm really glad she drove away and she was alright."
Students received email alerts overnight and U of M sent a tweet at 2:15 a.m. The attempted robbery is another reminder for students to be alert.
"Just so we can take extra precautions if we need to," said student Shelby Patrick. "We've already talked about walking in groups."
Security officers have always offered escorts.
Police hope publicizing the photo will help identify the crooks. The suspects are believed to be in their early 20s. One of the men had dreadlocks.
