SHELBY COUNTY, TN (WMC) - A Memphis police officer is in custody, charged with second-degree murder in the shooting of her roommate and girlfriend.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office says an argument between Memphis officer Jaselyn Grant, 34, and Keara Crowder, 29 spilled out into the neighborhood.

At one point, Crowder crouched behind a neighbor's pick-up truck, trying to hide and get away from Grant.

Both women lived together on Bassett Hall Drive.

"It's scary for it to happen right here under our nose," neighbor Bianca McMillian said.

"It's hard to hear about a police officer doing that, as far as committing a crime like that with a weapon," Corey Garner said. "I'm hoping for the best out of that scenario."

A 12-year-old boy was inside the house at the time of the shooting. Deputies say he was shot at, but survived. Grant is charged with attempted second-degree murder for shooting at the boy. Investigators believe the boy is Crowder's son.

The boy is now in the custody of the Department of Children Services.

"I have had a conversation with the sheriff," Memphis Police Chief Toney Armstrong said, "I have all the confidence in the world that they're going to do a thorough investigation and make the best determination as to what charges if any should be filed at that time."

According to Memphis police, Grant is relieved of duty until administrators can conduct a thorough investigation of the incident.
