Crime down at Memphis apartment communities

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Crime at a few Memphis apartments was reduced by 27 percent in the last year. That's according to data from Safeway Certification Program.

Spokesperson Juliane Harris says, in the past year, they've done inspections at 15 apartment communities, aiming to make change and reduce crime.

But before this initiative, residents did not feel as comfortable in their homes.  Sharon James, a resident at the The Coves at Yale Apartments, has lived there for the past two years with her three small children.

"When we first moved here it wasn't as safe.  We heard a lot of gunshots, it was a lot of break-ins," James recalled.

But, thanks to the Safeway Certification Program, James also says she's seen a big turn-around in the past year, including a large fence and a gate now installed at her complex.

The Safeway Certification Program also set forth requirements, encouraging the communities to abide by certain regulations. Some examples include adding gates, adding more lighting, more on-site security, and making sure that communities are abiding by the anti-trespassing program, which is set forth by the district attorney's office.

"Crime is down because everyone is looking for ways and means to truce crime," said Juliane Harris.  Harris added that residents are seeing a major reduction in burglaries, car break-ins, assaults, and even violent crimes.

Despite the reduction, recent data by the FBI finds that overall crime is down by 5 percent in Memphis.

But in small communities like The Coves at Yale Apartments, residents like James are relieved to live in a place where they and their kids are safe.

"They can come outside and feel safe," said James. "And not have to worry about somebody shooting or coming after them, gangs or none of that."
