1 person died in store fire, woman escapes separate fire

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - One person died in a store fire that happened in Memphis just after midnight on Netherwood Avenue near South Willet Street, and a woman escapes from a house fire a few hours later.

Police blocked Netherwood as firefighters searched inside Brooke's Party Store.

Memphis Fire Department confirmed that someone died in this fire. MFD's Lt. Wayne Cooke said the building did not have a sprinkler system or working fire detectors.

Around 3 a.m. Thursday, MFD was called to a house fire in the 700 block of Leland Street, near Kerr Avenue.

A woman was inside at the time the fire broke out. She got out of the home and is getting help from the Red Cross.

Fire investigators found a kerosene lantern inside the home.

The home did have a working smoke detector.

The official causes of both fires are under investigation.
